How Munich's system works
Munich has no voucher. Instead, it uses one online portal, the kita finder+, to register children for city-run childcare. All Kinderkrippen (nurseries for under-3s), Kindergärten, Horte (after-school care) and Häuser für Kinder (combined centres) run by the city are on it.
Other providers (private and non-profit) do not have to use kita finder+. For those, contact the provider directly. If you want the widest choice, use the portal and contact other providers too.
How to register
- Create an account in kita finder+.
- Register your child with as many facilities as you like.
- For children under six, mark one facility as preferred (bevorzugt). The city says it takes this into account as far as possible, but it is not a guarantee.
Using the portal is free. The portal is available in German, English and nine other languages.
Deadlines and offers
- Most places start on 1 September. For the main allocation round there is a registration deadline in spring. For September 2026 it was 11 March 2026. Check the kita finder+ page for the next year's date.
- Offers are sent to your account after the deadline.
- You have 10 days to accept an offer. If you don't respond in time, the place goes to someone else.
What it costs in Munich
Munich's municipal Kitas charge fees, but with income-based relief. The city has announced new fees from 1 September 2027. Families below a set household income pay nothing, families in a middle income band pay reduced fees, and sibling discounts continue. Holders of the München-Pass and families on certain social benefits have their fees waived completely. Check the city's fee page for the current thresholds.
For the national rules on entitlement and state subsidies, see the Kita guide.
Help
The city's Kita team answers questions by email at kita.rbs@muenchen.de or by phone on 089 233-96775. Munich also offers parent advice on childcare (Elternberatung zur Kinderbetreuung) through the city.
