Where to go
In Munich the registration office is the Bürgerbüro (citizens' office). It belongs to the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR), the city department for public order and citizen services. There are six Bürgerbüros:
| Bürgerbüro | Address |
|---|---|
| Pasing | Landsberger Straße 486 |
| Orleansplatz | Orleansstraße 50 |
| Leonrodstraße | Leonrodstraße 21 |
| Scheidplatz | Belgradstraße 77 |
| Ruppertstraße | Ruppertstraße 19 |
| Forstenrieder Allee | Forstenrieder Allee 61a |
The Ruppertstraße location is in the same street as the KVR's immigration service (Ruppertstraße 19) and the city's Welcome Center (Ruppertstraße 11). That is handy if you have several errands.
How to book
Book through the city's appointment page. The Anmeldung service page links straight to the right booking form. Munich's service page does not describe a walk-in option for registration, so plan for an appointment.
Munich rules that trip people up
- No early registration. Munich states that registering for a future move-in date is legally not possible. Book an appointment for a date after you have moved in, but within the two-week deadline explained in the national guide.
- You must attend yourself, or send someone with a power of attorney that covers registration matters.
- Second homes can't be done online. If Munich will be your secondary residence (Nebenwohnung), you need to register in person.
- Car documents: if you also update the address in your vehicle registration papers at the same time, Munich charges a separate fee. The Anmeldung itself is free.
Online registration
Munich links to the federal online service at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, but only for a main residence. You also need an ID card with an activated eID, and you must be moving from another address in Germany. First registrations from abroad don't qualify. In practice, most new arrivals in Munich need an in-person appointment.
English support
The city's Welcome Center München at Ruppertstraße 11 gives newcomers personal orientation advice, including on dealing with the authorities. Its page is also available in English. It is an advice point: the registration itself still happens at a Bürgerbüro.
